The backlight is the heart of every LCD display. It determines brightness, power efficiency, and visual quality. Here we explore the three main types—edge-lit, direct-lit, and mini-LED—so you can choose the right one for your project.
1. Edge-lit LCDs
LEDs are placed around the edges of the panel, using light guides to distribute brightness. Pros:
- ✔️ Slim and lightweight
- ✔️ Lower power consumption
- ❌ Brightness uniformity can be weaker
2. Direct-lit LCDs

LEDs sit directly behind the panel, providing strong and even brightness. Pros:
- ✔️ High brightness, better for outdoor use
- ✔️ More uniform lighting
- ❌ Thicker design, more power draw
3. Mini-LED Backlighting

Mini-LED uses thousands of small LEDs with local dimming. This offers the best of both worlds:
- ✔️ Very high brightness (>2000 nits possible)
- ✔️ Better power efficiency compared to direct-lit
- ✔️ Improved contrast (near OLED levels)
- ❌ Higher cost and complexity
Which Backlight Should You Choose?

- For slim devices → edge-lit.
- For outdoor kiosks → direct-lit or mini-LED.
- For premium applications (medical, automotive) → mini-LED.
